Born as conjoined twins and separated successfully after a complicated surgery two years ago, Riddhi and Siddhi, who are living at a city hospital, have started going to school.
The girls were admitted at a school in Parel, central Mumbai, yesterday.
The girls were born in Raigad district in May 2013. They were born conjoined; attached from waist with shared pelvis and uterus.
The newborn twins then underwent a separation surgery. The surgery that was almost six hours long was successful and both the girls were saved. Most of the expenses were met through donations as the family was poor, said Navnath Kamble who works at an NGO that helped in the surgery.
However, the parents soon stopped visiting the twins, and now Bai Jerbai Wadia Hospital where they were operated is their home.
After regular check-ups and medication, the medical officers of the hospital decided to bring the twin girls into the normal world. As a part of it, the girls were admitted to the nearby municipal school yesterday.
The girls will need to undergo two more surgeries, medical officers at the hospital said.
