Two dreaded undertrials in Uttar Pradesh, who had escaped after killing a police constable there, were today arrested from their hideout here during a joint operation by Mumbai police and its UP counterpart, police said.
The brother duo, Rishikumar Rajput and Chandrakumar Rajput, also opened firing twice from their two pistols, but the teams of city police Crime Branch and UP's Special Task Force refrained from firing in defence during the 30 minutes operation and managed to catch the accused after a chase, police said.
Acting on a tip-off that the two accused have been hiding in Mumbai for over a month, a trap was laid near Lallubhai compound in suburban Mankhurd.
Spotting the cops, the duo tried to escape and fired one round each from their pistols, said police said.
"Police teams refrained from firing in defence and managed to catch the accused," said Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Himanshu Roy told PTI.
The duo was placed under arrested now and would be taken to UP on a transit remand.
In a daring broad daylight attack, a UP police constable Ajay Yadav had been shot dead allegedly by the two. However, the duo had escaped while they were being taken to district jail from a court in Mainpuri district in UP on January 31.
The duo was also wanted in connection with the killings of the principal of an intermediate college Rajveer Singh and a medicine shop owner Pawan Shakya in Mainpuri district few years ago.
