Shiv Shankar Rajbhar and Pappu Halder were arrested by a police team, formed to check the rising number of ATM thefts in the South West Division (SWD) mainly in Behala Police Station area, when they were trying to break open the ATM on Roy Bahadur Road at around 3 AM today, DC SWD Meeraz Khalid said.
"At about 3 am a person was seen inside an ATM on Roy Bahadur Road. The shutter was half-down. Our team intercepted the suspect and learnt that he was Rajbhar. Breaking equipments like plus, wrench, screwdriver were found with him using which he was trying to break open the ATM," Khalid said.
Rajbhar is a resident of Kolabagan while Pappu hails from Canal Road in Behala Police Station limits, the DC said adding that both of the two accused were suspected to be involved in thefts of ATMs in other Divisions also.
Incidentally, yesterday a special team was formed for arresting miscreants involved in ATM thefts. All police stations of Behala Division coordinated in this effort, Khalid said.
"The special team has been formed to keep surveillance on all ATMs. The ATMs have been divided so that each and every ATM can be covered by the teams," the DC said.
