Three policemen, including a Sub-Inspector, were today placed under suspension for negligence of duty in this regard.

Suresh Kumar Yadav alias Surinder Yadav and Chhathu Nishat, who were arrested with fake currency yesterday escaped from lock-up of Rawalpindi police station last night, SP (Phagwara) Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh said.

The two had been arrested near Bein culvert at T-Point Bohogpur on Phagwara-Hoshiarpur road and booked under Sections 489-A (counterfeiting currency-notes or bank-notes) and 489-C (possession of forged or counterfeit currency-notes or bank-notes) of IPC, the SP said.

The duo escaped from police custody after tearing open a portion of the backwall of the lock-up room, Khakh said.

He claimed the portion was hollow and weak as a staircase passed through it, adding one of the culprits was a mason who broke open the rear portion of the wall.

A fresh case under Section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of IPC was registered against the duo. The duo were to be presented before judicial magistrate today.
