Two farmers were killed after their motorcycle was hit by a police vehicle near here even as police booked the deceased saying it was a case of drunken driving.
The mishap, which led to a protest by local residents, took place near Galiveedu village in this district last night.
The farmers, Sudhakar Reddy (37) and Bayya Reddy (55), resident of Chemalcherevu Palli village, were heading home when their bike was bit by a police jeep, police said today.
They were seriously injured and brought to Government hospital at Rayachoty, where they succumbed to their injuries, they said.
Local residents and their relatives alleged that inordinate delay in providing treatment to Sudhakar and Bayya led to their death.
Meanwhile, police sources said Galiveedu Police filed a case against the deceased, alleging that the accident took place due to drunken driving by the motorcyclists.
As news about the case spread, hundreds of villagers gathered at the hospital and staged a sit-in demanding suspension of the policemen travelling in the jeep, and justice for the deceased.
Pulivendula Assistant ASP Anburajan rushed to Rayachoty to control the situation. Heavy police force was deployed in Rayachoty to maintain order.
