Two debt-ridden farmers from Nanded district in Maharashtra allegedly committed suicide, police said today.
The farmers - Nivruttee Kadam, a resident of Hardaf village and Purukhnath Mendake, from Manatha village of the district (both 42), took the extreme step after they lost their crops due to the recent heavy rains, officials from the Superintendent of Police Office, Nanded said.
Kadam consumed some poisonous chemical on October 9 and died on the same day. Mendake killed himself on October 4 by consuming some poisonous substance but the case was registered on October 9 at the local police station, they said.
"There have been excess showers in last couple of weeks and Nanded district is one of the worst-hit areas in Marathwada region. I am aware of both the suicide incidents and its causes are being investigated. Once we find it out, we will submit it in our report to the Maharashtra government," Nanded District Collector Suresh Kakavi told PTI over phone.
