Two get 10-year RI for drug trafficking in Chhattisgarh

Two persons have been awarded 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by a special court here in the district for their involvementin drug trafficking.
Additional District Judge and Special Judge (NDPS court) Manish Kumar Naidu yesterday sentenced the two -- Manoj Kumar Raut (30) and Ashwini Kumar Raut (29) -- to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment, after they were found guilty of smuggling 94.94 kg of ganja in 2013, Additional Public Prosecutor AK Shrivastav said.
Both the convicts are residents of Vikrampur in Angul district of neighbouring Odisha.
On October 31, 2013, the duo was intercepted by the police near Rengalpali village under Pusaur police station in Raigarh when they were attempting to smuggle 90 packets of ganja (weighing 94.94 kg) in an SUV from Odisha to Raigarh, Shrivastav said.
They were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and subsequently, a chargesheet was filed against them in December 2013, he added.
The hearing of the case went on for three years. Yesterday, the special court convicted the two, sentenced them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh each on them.
If the convicts fail to pay the fine amount, they would attract an additional jail term of two years each, said Shrivastav.
