Two youths have been arrested for allegedly forcing a Hindu woman to convert to Islam in Joura town in the district, police said today.
The duo, identified as Ismail Khan and Somvir Jatav, were arrested under Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act, 1968 yesterday. They were later produced in a court and sent to jail, Sub Divisional Officer of Police K D Sonakia told reporters.
Police also produced the victim, identified as Rachna in the court. She was later sent to 'Nari Niketan' (shelter home for women).
Sonakia said that a few days back Ismail Khan with the help of Jatav lured Rachna and later abducted her. Later, Khan allegedly forced her to embrace Islam and also performed nikah with her.
Acting on the complaint of saffron organisations, Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) submitted a report to Morena Collector, following which police registered a case against Khan and Jatav and arrested them.
According to police, both Rachna and Khan have given conflicting statements to the police on the issue.
However, following a probe, the SDM treated it as a case of forced religious conversion and arrested the duo.
