Two persons who allegedly used to make extortion calls by stealing mobile phones, have been arrested for demanding Rs 10 lakh from a sugar trader, police said today.
On a complaint of Kondli based sugar trader Rajkumar that he had received extortion calls for paying Rs 10 lakh from three different numbers in May, an FIR was registered under relevant Sections of IPC at New Ashok Nagar police station in East Delhi.
During investigation, the Crime Branch zeroed in on Guddu Mahto who was arrested on June 2.
"When confronted with material evidence against him, Mahto broke down and accepted his involvement in the crime and named his associate Ramu Chauhan," said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav.
Chauhan was nabbed from his house in New Kondli even as he tried to escape by jumping from the 3rd floor and injured his left leg, Yadav said.
Four mobile phones, including two snatched by them, that were used for calling the sugar trader to pay Rs 10 lakh threatening to kill him, were recovered from the accused.
During interrogation, the duo told police that they used to snatch mobile phones for making extortion calls and later destroyed the SIM cards, he said.
Mahto told police that he had targeted the sugar trader as he had worked with one of his relatives and frequently visited his office in the past.
