Two men were today arrested for allegedly trying to rape a 28-year-old woman here after thrashing her friend, police said.
The incident took place yesterday, police said.
The accused, identified as Sohail, a vegetable seller and J P Singh, a private employee, allegedly tried to rape the woman when she was talking to her friend by the roadside at Bowrampet yesterday, police said.
"The duo, who came in a car, beat up her male friend after tying his hands and then dragged the woman to nearby bushes, where they tried to rape her," a police official said based on the complaint filed by the woman.
Some local residents, who were passing by the area, heard the victim's screams and then alerted the police, who later rescued the woman.
The duo had managed to escape from the spot after seeing the police. However, the police traced and arrested the duo today.
A case was registered under relevant sections of the IPC and further investigation into the case is on, police said.
