Two JKLF men get life term for killing BSF officer

The case, investigated by the CBI, took place on October 10, 1990 when BSF inspector Dharambir Singh was killed near Sayeed Rehman Sahib market in Srinagar by the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) men.

"The designated TADA court, Jammu, vide order dated December 3, has convicted three accused persons for the murder of BSF inspector Dharambir Singh for their anti-national and terrorist activities.

"Fourth accused Farooq Ahmed Mir, a constable of Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police, was acquitted of the charges," CBI sources said.

The trio have been identified as Nazir Ahmed Sheikh, Shoukat Ahmed Khan and Farooq Ahmed Chichoo.

Sheikh has been handed life imprisonment and fine of Rs 5,000, life imprisonment and fine of Rs 10,000 and 5 years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) and fine of Rs 5,000 under various provisions of TADA and Ranbir Penal Code.

Sheikh will also undergo concurrent punishment of seven years RI and fine of Rs 5,000 (under Arms Act) and a fine of Rs 5,000.

Khan has been awarded life imprisonment and fine of Rs 5,000, life imprisonment and fine of Rs 10,000, five years RI and fine of Rs 5,000 and ten years RI and fine of Rs 7,000.

Chichoo has been sentenced to five years of imprisonment and fine of Rs 3,000 under Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act.

JKLF had been banned for its terrorist activities. Later, the Union Home Ministry took it off from the list of banned organisations about three years back following the group's decision to enter dialogue with the government and leave the path of violence.
