Two unidentified militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in north Kashmir's Kupwara district on Friday.
"Two terrorists have been gunned down so far by the army in an ongoing operation at Petha Wadar of Handwara area in the district," an army official said.
Acting on specific information about the presence of militants in the area, security forces launched a search operation there on Thursday night, he said.

The hiding militants fired upon the security forces triggering an encounter in which the two militants were killed, the official said.
He said the identity of the slain militants has not been ascertained yet.

The operation is in progress and further details are awaited, the official said.
Meanwhile, a police official said two AK assault rifles, six magazines, 46 rounds, four radio sets and four UBGL grenades were recovered from the scene of the gunbattle.
Two GPS sets, two maps, two matrix sheets, one watch and a diary were also recovered, the official said.
The militants were believed to be foreigners, he said, adding, the bodies of the ultras were buried at the local graveyard by police with the help of local Auqaf committee.
