Two minors were killed and two others seriously injured when an inebriated driver of private travel agency allegedly rammed his vehicle into them in East Delhi's New Ashok Nagar in the wee hours today.
The deceased have been identified as Shiva (15) and Daleep (13) who died on the spot while two of their friends Sahil (15) and Shubham (16) were being treated at Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital for the injuries.
Dharamveer (28), the driver of the MUV, was nabbed by the locals and was later arrested, the police said. His medical examination revealed that he was drunk at the time of the incident, they said.
The incident took place around 1:50 AM in Ghadauli area of New Ashok Nagar where a weekly Sunday market was held.
The four youths were returning after supplying water to a marriage function on a push-cart when a speeding vehicle ploughed into them, the police said.
"The local shopkeepers caught Dharamveer while a PCR van that was nearby took the children to the hospital. While Shiva and Daleep were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital, two others were admitted with serious injuries," said a senior police official.
A case under sections for drunk driving and negligence has been registered against Dharamveer at New Ashok Nagar police station and the vehicle has been impounded. The accident took place just a few hundred metres from the police station.
Dharmveer is a resident of Rajeev Colony in East Delhi. He is a driver with a private travel agency and used to ferry people late in the night.
