The US Geological Survey says a magnitude-5.5 quake hit at 5:43 a m (843 GMT) today about 19 miles (30 kilometres) from the northern city of Calama, causing no damage.
A second quake of magnitude-5.2 hit at 10:35 a.M. (1335 GMT).
It caused tall buildings to sway in Santiago, 104 miles (167 kilometres) north-northeast of the epicenter. But Chile's emergency services office says no damage to infrastructure has been reported.
Chile is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. A magnitude-8.8 quake and the tsunami it unleashed killed more than 500 people in 2010.
