CCSHAU Vice-Chancellor K S Khokhar said here today the Central Varietal Identification Committee headed by Dr S K Datta, Deputy Director General (Crop Sciences), Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR), in the All India Wheat and Barley Research Workers Meet held at Jawahar Lal Nehru Krishi Vishva Vidiayalya, Jabalpur, recenty, had identified varsity's wheat variety WH 1142 for release in North Western Plain Zone for timely sown restricted irrigation conditions.
Similarly, a barley variety BH 959 had been identified by the committee for timely sown irrigated conditions in the Central Zone comprising MP, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Kota and Udaipur divisions of Rajasthan, he added.
CCSHAU Director of Research S S Siwach said wheat variety WH 1142 gave an average yield of 48.1 q/ha, which was nearly 5 to 8 times more than check varieties WH 1080, HD 3043 and PBW 644.
Besides, this variety was resistant against yellow rust disease and possessed high levels of protein (12.1 per cent), iron (36.4 ppm), zinc (33.7 pm) and bread quality score(6.85).
