Two poachers were arrested with arms last night when they tried to sneak into Kaziranga National Park in Assam to kill rhinos, said a senior Forest Department official today.
The two poachers were taken into custody from Harmoti Chapori under Bagori range of the Park when they were almost ready to strike in the World Heritage Site, Divisional Forest Officer Subhashish Das said.
Stating that the duo was identified as Ashito Musahari and Md Nur Islam, Das said one .303 rifle and five live ammunitions were recovered from them.
The operation against the poachers was led by Assistant Conservator of Forest KNP Bagori range Ramen Das and jointly conducted by Jakhlabanda police station Officer in-Charge (OC) and Incharge of Bagori outpost.
Earlier on May 2, the police had arrested nine poachers, including three forest department staff, for killing and taking away horns of a rhino at Kaziranga National Park.
The gang had killed an adult male rhino, removed its horn and dumped the carcass on November 22 last year near Tunikati camp under Burapahar Range of KNP.
