Two robbers were lynched and two of their accomplices mercilessly thrashed after a group of people allegedly caught them looting 'kanwariyas' (devotees of Lord Shiva) in Gaya district of Bihar today.
Gaya Deputy Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Satish Kumar said four armed men were robbing pilgrims going towards Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar in Jharkhand in the morning on the road near Bishunganj village.
"The local people got information about this and hundreds of them ran towards the place to save the pilgrims. They surrounded the robbers, caught all of them, and thrashed them mercilessly. While two robbers died, two others have been seriously injured," Kumar said.
Of the two injured, one was rescued from the clutches of the mob by a police contingent and admitted to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College in Gaya town where his condition is stated to be serious, the DSP said.
The other injured robber managed to escape while being beaten up, and is currently holed up in the house of the head of Dhantir panchayat, which has been surrounded by people chasing him.
"We are trying to rescue him from the clutches of the crowd and additional forces have been rushed to area. The two bodies have been recovered and sent for postmortem," Kumar said.
The police official added that as per little information gleaned out from the hospitalised robber, he and his accomplices had come to Bihar from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.
The information is being verified and efforts are on to ascertain the identity of the two lynched persons.
