Subhas Chandra Ghosh, ranger of Binnaguri wildlife division, told PTI that two bisons had entered the tea garden, about 200 km from here, in the morning from a nearby forest creating panic among the tea workers and locals, who chased the animals to drive them out.
Facing a fusillade of stones from the tea workers and locals, the two bisons ran amok, injuring seven of them and 12 forest department workers before one of the animals gored the woman to death in public view.
Another tea worker who too faced the ire of the bisons later succumbed to his injuries at the Jalpaiguri hospital, where two others critically injured in the incident are being treated.
The chase lasted for several hours and later one of the bisons died. The ranger said the animal may have died after the chase as bisons have weak hearts.
Following the goring to death of the woman, locals and other tea workers beat up and injured eight forest department workers and damaged two of their vehicles, police said.
Police rushed to the spot and controlled the situation.
