Two undertrials lodged at the Thane Central Prison in Maharashtra allegedly beat up two jail officials during an enquiry into a harassment complaint against one of the inmates, a police official said today.
A jail inmate had complained to the prison authorities that another inmate, Ashish Nair, was harassing him.
Jailer Satish Mane called Nair to the prison's circle office to enquire into the complaint on Saturday when the latter allegedly beat him, the official said.
When another jailer present in the office tried to save Mane, Nair beat him also and broke the glass of a window in the premises, he said.
As Nair was being taken out of the office, another undertrial, identified as Abhinav Singh, came out of his cell and allegedly beat the two jailers, he said.
Senior prison officials rushed to the scene and took away the two undertrials, the police said.
Based on Mane's complaint, the Thane Nagar police registered offences against Nair and Singh under IPC sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 504 (intentional insult with an intent to provoke breach of peace), and 427 (mischief).
