Two wanted criminals killed in Meerut encounter: police

The Uttar Pradesh Police has claimed to have gunned down in an encounter two notorious criminals who had allegedly shot dead a newly-wed woman and decamped with jewellery worth lakhs on the Delhi-Dehradun highway last month.

Circle Officer Brajesh Kumar Singh said that the two persons - Himanshu and Dhiraj - were wanted in connection with the robbery on the Delhi-Dehradun highway.

"One 9 mm carbine, two magazines, two pistols, a .315 bore pistol, 44 rounds and one Hero Honda bike was also recovered," Singh said.

The officer said that STF SSP Abhishek Singh had received information following which the police tried to trace the two criminals. Following an encounter, both men, who carried a reward of Rs 25,000 each for information on them, were killed yesterday, he said.

The two had several other cases registered against them, he said.

Last month, armed robbers shot dead a bride and looted jewellery worth lakhs after intercepting a marriage party on the Delhi-Dehradun National Highway in Meerut district.

The incident occurred near Matore village, under the Dorala police station area, of Meerut, police said, adding that the groom and four others were injured in the attack.

The victims were returning to the district after the wedding ceremony in Ghaziabad district, officials had said.
