The women were returning home to Agarpara in a car after visiting a relative. When they asked for directions from locals, the villagers suspected them as child-lifters due to some miscommunication, a police officer said.
This led to a heated exchange of words between the villagers and the women. Following this, angry villagers beat-up the two women, ransacked thir vehicle and set it on fire, police said.
"They were initially taken to a primary health centre in Girat and later shifted to a nursing home at Kalyani in Nadia district," Barun Mitra officer-in-charge of Balagarh police station said.
"We have detained four persons in connection with the incident," the officer said.
