Two women died and half a dozen people have fallen ill after consuming suspected contaminated water in the Shyam Nagar here, prompting authorities to order a probe.
In the wake of reports of two women dying after drinking contaminated water in the Shyam Nagar area, two borewells which supplied water have been closed and a probe is on, Raipur Municipal Corporation (RMC) Commissioner Narendra Dugga told PTI.
On Monday, an elderly woman called Shanta Bai living at an old age home in Shyam Nagar died after vomiting and motions.
Next day, another woman Urvashi Sharma of RMC Colony died of the same problems, Dugga said, adding that around six people from the locality fell ill and had to be admitted to different hospitals in the capital.
"In both, the old age home and RMC Colony, water is supplied by corporation," he said.
Later, the area's residents complained of contaminated water, after which water supply from the two borewells were stopped and water samples sent for examination, he said, adding that RMC health officials have also been told to look into the matter.
