Two women drowned today in the Bagh river in Gondiya district of east Maharashtra while clicking selfies, police said.
The incident occurred this afternoon when a group of nine girl students from an institute had gone for a picnic to Rajegaon, 20 kms away from the district headquarter, police said.
The girls climbed a rock near the river which is in a full spate due to heavy rains, and started clicking selfies, when Megha Sahare (21) and Samta Nyyaykhare (20) lost their balance and fell into the river, a police official said.
The girls were swept away by strong water current before anybody could react, he said, adding that other girls of the group alerted Rawanvadi police about the incident.
The bodies of both the women were fished out with the help of local fishermen, he said, adding that a case of accidental death has been registered.
