Two women fall in septic tank; rescued

Two women were rescued from a septic tank where they fell Wednesday morning in suburban Chembur, said a civic official.

The women, rescued by fire brigade jawans, were later admitted to civic-run Sion Hospital where their condition is said to be stable, the official added.

Locals informed the fire brigade control room at 10.08 am that some persons had fallen into the underground sewage chamber at Vashi Naka near the Vinay English High School in Chembur, said the official from the Disaster Management Cell of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

"After getting the information, a team of fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and rescued the two women from inside the septic tank," he said.

The mishap occurred after a speeding truck ran over the septic tank and broke its cover made of concrete slab, the official said.

The police have been informed about the incident and the truck driver may be booked, he said.

The property belonged to the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and its officials were informed about the incident, the official added.

Local corporator Anjali Naik said she will ensure both the victims get justice.

Naik said, "I have noticed that several works are going on in my area and they come under the jurisdiction of MMRDA which has failed to do its job properly.

"I will take a follow-up of the pending sewerage works and also ensure the victims get justice in form of compensation or whatever rules permit."
