The two members of the dreaded Ayodhya squad identified as 'deputy commandant' Sikha Hansda and Champa Hembram had yesterday surrendered before Purulia SP C Sudhakar, DGP N Mukherjee told reporters here.
The two have close link with top Maoist leader Vikram, who was arrested from near the Jharkhand border 12 days ago, he said.
The SP accompanied the rebels to the Writers' Buildings where they surrendered to the DGP with a firearm and some cartidges. ADG (Law and Order) S Karpurakayastha was also present.
After the surrender, Sikha and Champa said they were "disenchanted" by the "principles of the outfit" and were misguided by the Maoist leaders.
The leaders took us to action and we felt bad when we found extortion and torture on common men. We decided to return to the mainstream and so we surrendered to the authorities, they said.
On November 18 last year, Maoist 'commander' Jagori Baske and her husband comrade Rajaram Soren surrendered at the state secretariat before Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
