Noting that people were hardly aware of the various welfare schemes launched for their benefit, the Uttarakhand government today asked its officials to ensure that such measures were properly publicised.

During a review of welfare schemes in the state, chief secretary Subhash Kumar said he was shocked to find during a recent visit to Hindolakhal in Tehri district that locals were unaware of the government's scheme of promoting education of girl child.

"People of the area were shockingly unaware of the state government's 'Balika Shiksha Protsahan Yojana' under which free bicycles are being provided to girls in the plains who are studying above Std VIII. For girl students in the hills, the government will open an FD account of Rs 2,850 each for them," the chief secretary said.

He asked district magistrates to identify the intended beneficiaries for the above scheme by May 25 after which Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna will tour different blocks to distribute bicycles and FDs among the schoolgirls.
