UCC not good for country but would respond to law panel:Owaisi

Observing that Uniform Civil Code is "not good" for country, AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi today said his party would respond to Law Commission's questionnaire on the issue unlike All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB).
"I respect the decision taken by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board. But, our political party has taken a decision three days ago that we as a political party would reply to that questionnaire," he said.
He contended that the questionnaire is loaded in favour of UCC. "But, we will definitely reply to that questionnaire," he said.
He said, "I have been consistently saying that uniform civil code is not good for the diversity and pluralism of this great nation of ours and diversity and pluralism are the ethos of this country. It is not going to help our country by having uniform civil code.

"For example, can an agreement be arrived on what should be the inheritance according to the Mitakshara and Dayabhaga schools? Can we take away cultural rights which Constitution has given to Nagaland and Mizoram?" he asked.
Owaisi wondered why Muslims are denied Hindu Undivided Family tax rebate and if it was not "gross violation" of right to equality and right to freedom of religion.
"Every community or every caste in India, whether they are Hindu, Muslim, Dalit, tribal, Christian or Sikhs, they have their own culture. This country celebrates the diversity of culture and religion," the Hyderabad MP said and questioned why the government was focusing on directive principles and not on other laws like banning alcohol.

Alleging that the NDA government has failed in reviving economy and boosting industrial growth, he charged that it is convenient for the government to turn around the debate on reforms.
