Speaking after inaugurating modern treatment equipment at Kozhikode Medical College, he said UDF government after coming to power had taken the initiative to start 10 medical colleges in the government sector.
Manjeri Medical college in Malappuram district had already started functioning, he said.
Work on starting seven medical colleges was in progress in various districts, he said, adding with the takeover of Kochi cooperative medical college and Pariyaram cooperative medical college by the government, the initiative for starting 10 medical colleges would be a reality.
Health minister V S Sivakumar, who presided, said Rs 120 crore central assistance will be sanctioned to make Kozhikode medical college a centre of excellence. The state government will provide Rs 30 crore and develop work totalling Rs 150 crore will be done in Kozhikode medical college, he said.
Chandy also inaugurated the new building of Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS) at the Government medical college campus.
