The opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) today questioned the recruitment rule of the state police which requires women candidates to complete a 3 km run within seven minutes saying even champion athletes would fail to accomplish it.
"Are we selecting police recruits or athletes for Olympics?" UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh asked, while moving a special motion in the Meghalaya Assembly.
He was referring to the recruitment advertisement issued last month by the chairman of the Central Recruitment Board of the state police for filling up over 1,400 vacancies.
As per the advertisement, in the physical test, the time limit for female candidates to complete a 3 km run was seven minutes.
Referring to records by top athletes of the world from 1975 to 1993, Lyngdoh said, "Champion women athletes have covered three km in eight minutes and the chairman of the board expects our women to cover the same distance in seven minutes or less."
Demanding the government to clarify the matter and put the advertisement on hold till it is sorted out, he said, "even champions have not been able to manage the standards set by Meghalaya Police."
The UDP legislator also highlighted other issues including the restriction wherein a candidate cannot apply for more than one post.
Replying to the motion, state Home Minister Roshan Warjri said the government would re-examine the notification on the recruitment advertisement and take action.
