Parents and elders are primarily responsible for the dwindling number of children in Kannada medium schools, veteran litterateur and theatre artist Professor Ramdas said at Udupi near here.
Delivering the presidential address at the ninth Udupi District Kannada Sahitya Sammelan at the Poornaprajna College Auditorium here last evening, he said parents were diverting the growth of the children due to high aspirations and greed for quick money and status.
He said that parents had apparently failed to guide the children in the right path and made them puppets of western culture. The children were becoming victims of TV shows and were attracted to superficial temporary glamour. Hard work and dedication are diminishing and the new trends in education hinder the reading habits of children. Clarity and accuracy of language was highly neglected declining the quality of the language, he said.
The sammelan was inaugurated by Admar math pontiff Sri Vishwapriya theertha Swamiji. He said that more opportunities should be created for the growth of the regional language since its growth means the growth of the people.
Thirteen books were released at the function by former president of Kannada sahithya parishad Harikrishna Punaroor. A book exhibition and painting exhibition were also being held at the venue.
