UGC seeking legal view on DU 'compromise formula'

UGC is learnt to have sought legal opinion on the compromise formula proposed by Delhi University amidst its renewed push to get colleges under the varsity to start admissions to the undergraduate programme.
DU had earlier today sent a six-point proposal, suggested by a group of academicians, to UGC in response to an ultimatum by it about immediately starting the admission process.
Officials have said that while UGC accepted all but one proposal, there were some legal issues which came in the way and, hence, it was seeking the views of legal experts.
UGC has once again asked DU to start the admission process at once even as the stalemate entered its third day today with hectic negotiations on between the varsity and the Commission over the compromise formula.

UGC had last night set a deadline of this morning for Delhi University to roll back the controversial four-year undergraduate programme and start admissions as per the earlier three-year structure.
But DU sent a letter to the Commission, signed by its Registrar Alka Sharma, saying that, "The university is of the opinion that given the situation where admissions are being delayed... (a) blended proposal submitted by some eminent persons to UGC and DU may provide the way forward.
"The proposal entails admitting all students to a three- year undergraduate course with honours and will also obviate the need to call for fresh registrations. We await your response in order to convene the statutory bodies at the earliest in the best interests of the students and the academic community.
