An Indian-origin activist today took over as the mayor of Harrow, a borough of north London.
Councillor Rekha Shah, who was born and raised in Mumbai, has been serving as deputy mayor of the area for the past year.
"As the mayor of Harrow, I will be the first citizen of Harrow. I'm very much looking forward to representing our diverse and united community in Harrow and working with a large array of voluntary organisations who do such a fantastic job in serving and supporting people," the Labour party member said.
Shah became a councillor in Harrow 14 years ago and worked actively in a number of committees of Harrow Council before being elected to the top job of the council.
"I am hoping to serve to the best of my ability in my mayoral year and be a good ambassador of our richly diverse borough of Harrow," she said.
