Britain's senior-most Indian-origin Cabinet minister Priti Patel today greeted people with her Diwali message celebrating the achievements of the Hindu, Sikh and Jain diaspora communities in the UK.
The UK international development secretary also described the "beautiful celebration" as a time for reflecting on the true meaning of Diwali and donating generously to good causes around the world.
"While we celebrate, we remember that from Syria to Sudan, there are millions of people living in fear of war and conflict, or living with the repercussions of a humanitarian disaster, as we have witnessed in Haiti where at least 200,000 homes have been affected.
"Diwali prompts us to consider how fortunate we are to live peaceful and comfortable lives, and the importance of offering hope to those who are suffering and less fortunate," reads the message by the Conservative party MP.
"My Department continues to keep its promise to the world's poorest people, and during these five days of festivities, millions more will also give hope to those less fortunate by donating generously to charities and good causes to help those in need," she adds.
Describing the "Festival of Lights" as one of the world's most iconic religious celebrations, she highlighted how Britain has embraced Diwali all around the country through the positive impact of the Indian diaspora.
"Now is also a time to celebrate the achievements of the Hindu, Sikh and Jain diaspora communities in the UK. For me, this is an opportunity to shine a light on thoseindividuals who take this country fromstrength to strength; it is a moment in time that reminds us that patience, optimism, and hope brings success and rewards," she said.
