Ukraine's refusal to get closer to the West by signing a landmark deal at a summit today shows that its President Viktor Yanukovych is taking the country 'nowhere', Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said.
"The Ukrainian president is not ready to go further into integration with the European Union," she told reporters on the second final day of a difficult summit between EU leaders and six ex-Soviet states that has highlighted East-West tensions.
A years-long bid by the EU to draw mighty Ukraine into the Western fold was headed for failure after leaders of the 28-nation bloc failed to convince Yanukovych to sign a landmark political and trade deal that has upset former master Moscow.
"I think that today's Ukrainian leadership (is) choosing the way which is going nowhere," the Lithuanian president said.
"This is the decision of current Ukrainian leadership to stop progress in their country," she added.
