Ukrainian GM Neverov tames Roy to take sole lead

Grand Master Valeriy Neverov of Ukraine, seeded no. 14, defeated India's IM Saptarshi Roy to become the sole leader after the fifth round in the Open category of the 2nd IIFL Wealth Mumbai International Chess Tournament today.
The other overnight joint leaders -- Sayantan Das, Shyaamnikhil P and Tarun V Kanth - drew their respective games being played at the Mount Litera International School at the Bandra-Kurla Complex here.
The game on the first board saw Neverov pitted against Roy of West Bengal with the black pieces. It was a complicated Sicilian Richter-Rauzer, where Roy went on the kingside to build a mighty attack.

Neverov defended resourcefully and then, in a dynamically equal ending, Roy made some wrong moves which proved costly and went on to finish on the losing side.
Shyaamnikhil and Sayantan played an interesting game as well with a curious end game where Shyaamnikhil, with white pieces, had a king and a rook while Sayantan had a bishop, two pawns, and the king.
After some close monitoring by both players they decided to call a truce while Tarun settled for a draw with Akash Thakur who is rated 300 points above the former.

The results enabled Neverov, with 4.5 points to his credit, enjoy a comfortable half-point lead after five rounds of play.

In the junior category event, Indian lad Sankarsha Shelke of Ahmednagar continued to dominate by successfully defeating the top seed Gukesh D of Andhra Pradesh.
