The anti-talk faction ULFA (Independent) today urged the Bangladesh judiciary to review its verdict on the death sentence given to its 'Chief of Staff' Paresh Barua.
"With due respect to the Bangladesh Court, I state that he is not a criminal as per the court verdict and the Court should review the verdict through a due process of the law of the country and let the innocent go free," Chairman Abhizeet Asom said in a statement e-mailed to PTI here.
"Our Chief of Staff's involvement on the procurement of arms was for defense purpose in fighting a low intensity war imposed by the Indian state," he said.
Barua was sentenced to death on January 30 by a Bangladesh court for the seizure of 10-truck loads of weapons destined for ULFA hideouts in north-eastern India through Bangladesh territory on April 2, 2004, which was the neighbouring country's biggest ever weapons haul.
