The head of the United Nations Population Fund and a former health minister of Nigeria who also headed his country's fight against AIDS, Babatunde Osotimehin, has died, the UN said today. He was 68.
Osotimehin passed away suddenly at his home Sunday evening, said a statement from UNFPA.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised Osotimehin as a strong advocate for the health of women and girls worldwide.
"The world has lost a great champion of health and well- being for all," he said.
Osotimehin led the UNFPA, which provides reproductive health and birth control services in more than 150 countries, since 2011 and held the rank of UN under-secretary-general.
"Sexual and reproductive health and reproductive rights are among the most important, and often sensitive, on the international agenda," Guterres said.
"Dr Babatunde's calm yet ardent efforts helped families get the sexual and reproductive health services they need."
A trained physician, Osotimehim also served as minister of health in Nigeria and led the national AIDS agency.
