A meeting of the Delhi Cabinet, presided over by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, today discussed the recommendations made by a group of ministers (GoM), which was set up last year to provide relief and expedite developmental works in the colonies.

Sources said although the Cabinet has in principle agreed on some of the recommendations of the three-member GoM headed by PWD Minister Raj Kumar Chouhan but still it felt that the issues need further examinations.

"The Cabinet will again deliberate on the report either on Monday or Tuesday before taking final views on the recommendations," a source said.

Lack of developmental work in unauthorised colonies, which have been home to around 60 lakh people, was cited as a major reason for Congress' defeat in the civic polls recently and Dikshit has already issued orders to speed up infrastructure development in the unauthorised colonies.

The GoM, which was formed in September last year, in its report had recommended allowing sell and purchase of properties in unauthorised colonies which came up on private land.

It also recommended allowing construction activities in these colonies provided they had prior approval of the agencies concerned. If accepted, these recommendations will be major reprieve for lakhs of residents of unauthorised colonies. The government had freezed construction activities in over 1,200 colonies after they were given provisional regularisation certificates in 2008. MORE
