Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi deliberated this evening on the way ahead for the much-debated legislation.

Sources in the Congress said that a decision on the issue will be taken by tomorrow.

There have been indications that the government is now having second thoughts on bringing the bill in this session.

This was because differences still persist on some of the issues despite the government holding consultations on it with leaders of a number of political parties, sources said.

Only yesterday, Minister Minister of State of Personnel V Narayanasami had said that the government stands by the committment to bring the bill in the present session.

The amended form of the bill includes deletion of the controversial provision for Lokayukta creation and bringing more transparency in appointment of CBI chief.

The amended bill was widely speculated to be considered by the Cabinet yesterday but it did not happen with the sources saying it could be given post-facto approval after passage in the Rajya Sabha.

Debate on the bill, passed by the Lok Sabha in December last year, could not be completed in the upper house during the last Winter session due to technical reasons.

While some sources said the bill would come up on Monday, some others insisted it could not be possible before Tuesday, the last day of the Budget session.

BJP has said that the government should not think it can get away with a repeat of the scenario that took place on the last day of the Winter session on the Lokpal bill when the debate continued till midnight and the House was adjourned without completing the discussion on the bill. (MORE)
