An undertrial, who was brought to the Thane court for hearing in a case damaged a police van and injured himself in the process after he got into a scuffle with the policeman escorting him here.
PI SB Salunke of Koparkhairne has in a complaint lodged with the Thane Nagar police station said that he was accompanying the alleged accused Ganesh Ranganath Shinde (30) while being brought to the court yesterday.
The trouble began after the hearing got over and he was being escorted to the waiting police van to take him back to Taloja jail in Navi Mumbai.
Shinde's relatives had gathered near the van to give him some food and daily articles when the officer with him refused let him accept it.
The kin were told to come to the jail and hand him over the items as per rules. This annoyed Shinde, who in a fit of rage abused the policeman and broke the window panes of the van injuring himself.
Thane Nagar police have registered an offence against the undertrial under section 353 and 427 of the IPC and also under Section 3 for damage to public property.
