Determined to regain lost ground after the drubbing it received in last year's Delhi Assembly elections, Congress today presented a united picture at Sonia Gandhi's rally here with all senior leaders, including the seven Lok Sabha candidates of Delhi, showing up.
Exuding confidence of victory, the leaders drew cheers from the crowd which numbered around 20,000 persons at the campaign rally, ten days ahead of the Lok Sabha polls to be held here.
"We will win all seven seats in Delhi. If we ensure the seven seats, the party will form government at Centre," Congress candidate from East Delhi Parliamentary seat, Sandeep Dikshit said.
"People talk about Narendra Modi wave, but where is the wave? BJP president Rajnath Singh would not have changed his seat from Ghaziabad to Lucknow had there been Modi's wave. BJP leaders are deserting their seats and searching for safe seats. The wave is all in advertisements. BJP is misleading people," he said.
Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh took aim at Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party which quit the Delhi government after 49 days of rule.
"People have seen development in the 15-year-rule of the Congress government. They have also seen the mess in the 49-day-rule of the Aam Admi Party where all development has been stalled. There is no development for the past three months," Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh said.
In her first public meeting in Delhi since the announcement of Lok Sabha polls, Sonia Gandhi said patriotism flows in the veins of Congress and one can learn it from the "sacrifices" made by party leaders, drawing applause from the gathering.
Wooing voters, she targeted the poor and minorities and attacked BJP for its "extremist and divisive ideology".
According to police sources about 20,000 people had come to the rally while seating arrangements were made for only 12,000. Apart from the venue, even the holding area was brimming with people. At one time, police had to close all the gates to control the crowd.
