Congress will observe state-wide "Daman Virodhi Diwas (anti-oppression day)" tomorrow to protest against the police lathi-charge on party workers during a demonstration over the poor law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.
Party workers will hold dharnas at all district and city headquarters against yesterday's police action and submit a memorandum addressed to the Governor, demanding stern action against the erring policemen, chairman of the communications department of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee Satyadev Tripathi said today.
"Police in plain clothes indulged in brick-batting to hide their actions and lathi-charged the Congress workers and to defame us, they alleged that we pelted stones," Tripathi said, adding that the party will continue to raise its voice against this kind of "barbarism".
Meanwhile, UPCC president Nirmal Khatri also refuted charges that Congress workers pelted stones saying that police have taken this stand in order to hide its shortcomings.
"Congress workers were peacefully moving towards the Vidhan Sabha to protest over raging public issues when police baton charged them without provocation," Khatri said in a press release.
The party stalled proceedings of both the houses of the state legislature over the issue today and demanded judicial probe into yesterday's police action.
