"It is perhaps for the first time that the chief minister of the state has to participate in campaigning for local body polls and address election meetings," senior SP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ram Gobind Chaudhary told reporters.
Chaudhary said the "hollow claims of the government is now out before the people of the state. The law and order situation in the state has already gone for a toss, which is tarnishing the image of the state government."
Chaudhary's comments came as Adityanath today held a public meeting in Aligarh in the run up to the three-phase civic body polls scheduled to begin on November 22. The chief minister said his government was committed to establish the rule of law in the state.
On a question over a possible tie-up between the BSP and the SP for the upcoming polls, Chaudhary said: "At an appropriate time, the central leadership of the party will take a decision on this.
