Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik today expressed concern over the lack of quality teachers in universities and said teachers taking genuine interest in teaching are needed.
Addressing a conference of vice-chancellors organised by the Indian Universities Federation, Naik said such teachers were needed in higher education who take real interest in teaching.
Saying that university education was very important in shaping the future of the students, he pointed that shortage of teachers was an important issue in this regard.
While the tendency of coaching was growing, the attendance of students in university classes seemed to be decreasing, he said.
Citing that Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya used to encourage students personally, Naik said the sense of bonding between teachers and students no longer exists.
Referring to the VCs conference, he said such events were needed to give a direction to higher eduation. The decisions taken in the conferences should be sent to the Centre, state government and Governors so that they could be incorporated while framing future policies, he said.
The Governor said that along with the challenges of globalisation, the power of the market has increased and education has been commercialised.
There is a need to think about making higher education cheap and available to all, he added.
