Addressing a conference of vice-chancellors organised by the Indian Universities Federation, Naik said such teachers were needed in higher education who take real interest in teaching.
Saying that university education was very important in shaping the future of the students, he pointed that shortage of teachers was an important issue in this regard.
While the tendency of coaching was growing, the attendance of students in university classes seemed to be decreasing, he said.
Citing that Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya used to encourage students personally, Naik said the sense of bonding between teachers and students no longer exists.
The Governor said that along with the challenges of globalisation, the power of the market has increased and education has been commercialised.
There is a need to think about making higher education cheap and available to all, he added.
