UP launches Rs 1,603 cr clean water project in 10 districts

The government of Uttar Pradesh today launched a Rs 1,603 crore World Bank-backed project aimed at providing clean water to over 25 lakh people.
The World Bank is supporting the project with an International Development Association (IDA) credit of Rs 801.5 crore. IDA is the World Bank's concessionary lending arm, which provides credit with 25 years to maturity and a grace period of five years.
The project to provide clean water over a six year period will cover about 5,300 habitations under 890 gram panchayats in 10 districts, the World Bank said in a statement.
Only 20.2 per cent of the population in Uttar Pradesh has access to drinking water in their homes.

The World Bank will provide 50 per cent of the total expense while the central and the state governments will provide 29 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively, the statement said.
The World Bank has been supporting the Uttar Pradesh government's development programmes since the 1960s through investment projects and technical assistance.
