The National Human Rights Commission has ordered the Uttar Pradesh government provide Rs 1 lakh as monetary relief to the family of a 10-month-old child who died due to medical apathy at a hospital last year.
It has asked the state government, which has admitted lapses on the part of the doctors and the nurses of the hospital in the Bahraich district, to pay the relief to the next of the kin of the child.
In a statement, the NHRC informed that the state government has initiated disciplinary action against the three doctors involved in the case while the services of a staff nurse and a contract sweeper have been terminated.
The incident occurred on August 9.
"The Commission, taking on record the report of the State Government, has observed that it is a clear case of violation of human rights of the child who lost life due to the negligent officials. It has recommended that the State Government pay monetary relief of Rs 1 lakh to the next of kin of the child," the NHRC said.
The Commission had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident on the basis of a media report and issued a notice to the Principal Secretary of the Health and Family Welfare Department of the state.
"The government hospitals are approached by general public, especially the poor people, who cannot afford expensive treatment at private hospitals. Timely treatment in this case, could have saved a precious human life," it said.
