UP Police gets NHRC notice

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) today issued a notice to Uttar Pradesh Police in wake of reports of a man being kept in police lock-up for five days without a formal complaint.
The action was taken after the rights panel took suo motu cognisance of a media report about a man being kept in the lock-up of Noida Sector-58 police station for five days without a formal complaint or an FIR, an NHRC statement statement said here today.
A notice in this case has been issued to Deputy Inspector General of Police of Gautam Budh Nagar district.
According to the report, the man, who runs a mobile phone shop in Vijay Nagar area of Ghaziabad, was picked up by police on June 28 at around 3:00 AM on allegations that he purchased stolen mobile phones. He was kept in the lock-up for five days. However, there was no formal complaint or an FIR against him.
The Commission observed the contents of the report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights.
