Citing security reasons, BJP leader Varun Gandhi's cavalcade was today stopped by the Uttar Pradesh police from entering a Muslim-dominated area in the state.
"Gandhi and his supporters wanted to conduct a roadshow passing from Muslim-dominated area. Due to security reasons, route of Gandhi was diverted from Shiv Nagar trisection in Bahraich," IG STF, Ashish Gupta told reporters here.
Irked BJP workers blocked road and got involved in a minor scuffle with police personnel posted at the area.
However, the protest was short-lived as it was soon called off on Gandhi's insistence.
Gupta said BJP members had not taken permission for the roadshow.
"As they have not taken prior permission, his (Gandhi's) route was diverted to avert any untoward incident," he said.
Earlier in the day, Gandhi, along with state president Laxmi Kant Bajpai and other leaders went to meet family members of former MLA Bhagauti Prasad, who recently passed away, at Madara of Shravasti district.
Gandhi assured them of all help gave a cheque of Rs 1 lakh.
