UPA in power by manufacturing majority: Yechury

Left parties today attacked the UPA-II coalition for failing to resolve problems of the people, the "rapid succession" of scams during its four-year tenure and for remaining in power by "manufacturing majority".
The CPI(M) also accused the Congress-led coalition of "match-fixing" with the principal Opposition BJP to disrupt Parliament proceedings.
"The UPA, which started four years ago, is not the UPA today. It doesn't have a majority in Parliament. It manufactures majority, and this is done with the help of the CBI. Therefore, it is a minority government which is manufacturing majority to survive," senior CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury told PTI here.

He said the UPA-II rule has been marked by "the rapid succession in which scams have unfolded and the unbridled manner of implementing economic reform measures by the government.
"As a result, it has cemented what began in the NDA period -- that is, creation of two Indias -- Shining for the rich and Suffering for the poor, by following economic policies that enrich the rich and impoverish the poor."
Yechury blamed the UPA-II for "the very grave devaluation of Parliament itself ... With able support and match-fixing with the main Opposition party".

He said the entire Winter Session and second half of the Budget Session were disrupted as the government refused to accept the Opposition demands of setting up a joint parliamentary panel on 2G scam and resignation of two ministers (Ashwani Kumar and Pawan Kumar Bansal), but accepting them only after the sessions were over.

"Had the government accepted the demands earlier, these sessions would not have been disrupted. It is the arrogance and obduracy of the government which has led to such a pass."
Yechury said several important election promises have not been implemented, like Women's Reservation Bill, Lokpal and Judicial Accountability.
