A nationwide power blackout hit Bangladesh today when a transmission line supplying electricity from India broke down.
The interconnection line used for transmission of 450 megawatts at Bheramara in Kushtia district, tripped at 11:30 am, a source at Power Development Board (PDB) said.
The sudden vacuum caused disruption of power generation at all power plants across the country, the Daily Star reported.
Some power plants resumed generation at around 1:00 pm.
However, the power supply was restored to 80 per cent areas of the country close to midnight.
Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB) officials said power supply to only 20 percent areas of the country remained to be restored.
"At this moment, 4000 megawatt electricity is being fed into the National Grid. Power is being supplied to 80 percent areas (across the country). The other areas will receive power soon," PGCB Managing Director Masum al-Beruni told bdnews24.Com at around 11:30pm.
Airport operations continued through generators since noon amid the power disruption, said Rezaul Karim, public relation officer of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh.
Dhaka Medical College and Hospital, the country's largest public hospital, also used a standby generator.
